CrossFire runs on a heavily modified LithTech engine. Almost everything the client loads is packed into .REZ archives in the game folder; newer ones are encrypted.
- .LTB
- Models: characters, weapons and map props, with their bones and animation clip names.
- .DTX
- Textures (skins, map surfaces, interface art).
- .DAT
- Compiled map worlds: geometry, lighting and the objects placed in the level.
- .WAV / FMOD
- Sounds: loose clips plus FMOD banks for music and effects.
- Data tables
- Encrypted script tables that hold weapon damage, hit box multipliers and movement. OpenCF's weapon pages are read from these.
The OpenCF desktop app
The Windows app opens these archives read-only: it shows models in 3D, maps, textures and data tables, and plays sounds. It never changes game files and never touches a running game.
